GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A 49-year-old man died and a 61-year-old man was injured in a head-on crash in Gaines Township just before noon Thursday.
The wreck, near 100th Street and Eastern Avenue SE, happened when a westbound Hyundai Santa Fe crossed the center line and struck an oncoming eastbound Saturn sedan head-on, police said.
Daniel VanDommelen was trapped inside his Saturn. The Dorr resident was later pronounced dead at the scene after being extricated from the vehicle.
Todd Harrell from Plainwell was driving the SUV and taken to a hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening abdominal pain.
The sheriff's department has not said yet what deputies think caused the crash. The road was wet at the time with standing water in ruts in the pavement.
Alcohol was not a factor and both drivers were wearing seat belts.
Aero Med was initially called to the scene, but called off before arriving.
