PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) - Two juveniles and two adults are accused in connection with stealing three vehicles during a home invasion, fleeing police during a chase and then crashing one of the cars.
Three of the suspects are in custody and the fourth is still being sought by police.
The break-in occurred as the residents slept around 1:55 a.m. Thursday in the 1500 block of Kickapoo Court in Kalamazoo, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
The homeowner later received a phone call from a parent advising that police had inquired about the resident's car. The resident then learned the residence had been broken into and items were missing, including car keys. The thieves stole the resident's three vehicles, police said.
A Portage Department of Public Safety officer spotted one of the stolen vehicles around 2:46 a.m. The officer tried to stop the 2006 Toyota Corolla on Oakland Drive near I-94, but the driver sped away northbound, according to a news release from PDPS.
Police pursued the vehicle into Kalamazoo where the driver crashed on Oakland Drive north of Whites Road. The driver and three passengers exited the vehicle and ran into the Woods Lake area.
Two juvenile females and one adult male were apprehended within minutes of the crash, Portage police said. Charges of resisting and obstructing a police officer will be sought against these suspects.
Another male suspect, believed to be the driver, has still not been located. A description of him has not been released.
Kalamazoo police later located one of the other stolen vehicles at Linden Grove Middle School, 4241 Arboretum Parkway. The unoccupied vehicle appeared not to have been damaged and was returned to its owner.
