PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) - A lightning strike is being blamed for causing a fire at Kalamazoo County residence Tuesday morning.
Portage Department of Public Safety crews were dispatched just before 5 a.m. Tuesday to the 7000 block of Venice Drive. They arrived and saw the fire coming from the roof.
Two people in the home had already evacuated.
Crews were able to get the fire under control 30 minutes later.
"Firefighters remained on the scene for another two hours extinguishing hot spots and doing extensive overhaul of the attic," according to a news release.
The fire caused extensive damage to the roof and attic of the home.
Members of the Texas Township Fire Department and Pride Care Ambulance assisted at the fire scene.
About a dozen people were displaced.
One person was arrested after a threatening comment resulted in a school district briefly locking down its schools Friday morning.
