KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A man is in police custody after assaulting a woman and then fleeing to his home where a standoff with authorities ensued in Kalamazoo County.
He surrendered a few hours later and the 30-year-old female victim suffered minor injuries from the assault.
The investigation began when Kalamazoo Township police officers were dispatched at 5 p.m. Monday to a domestic assault occurring in a vehicle in the 1000 block of E. Mosel Avenue, according to a news release.
Officers arrived but the 47-year-old Kalamazoo man left the area and went to his home in the 1500 block of Seville Avenue.
Authorities tried to apprehend him there but he refused to obey commands and barricaded himself inside the residence.
The suspect then made threats to police, saying he had weapons. Authorities learned of his lengthy criminal background, so the Kalamazoo Regional SWAT team was called to the scene, Kalamazoo Township Lt. Bryan Ergang told 24 Hour News 8.
The suspect eventually surrendered without incident and was arrested on charges of domestic assault, and resisting and obstructing a police officer.
