BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) - The 22-year-old man accused of killing a Battle Creek infant will face charges of open murder.
Police say Depaul Brown is responsible for the death of 17-month-old Jaleah Boyd though they have not said how they suspect the infant was killed. Autopsy results are pending.
A Calhoun County magistrate authorized the murder warrant Saturday. Brown, who authorities say is an habitual offender, is being held without bond at least until his arraignment Monday.
Battle Creek police received a call around 5:30 p.m. Thursday from the child's babysitter who said Jaleah Boyd was unresponsive at the child's parents' apartment in the 900 block of North Avenue.
An ambulance crew arrived at the scene but could not revive Jaleah.
Battle Creek Police told 24 Hour News 8 Jaleah had elaborate bruising around her neck.
Police are investigating a report of a home invasion, but say there are inconsistencies.
A Kalamazoo County sheriff's deputy will not face criminal sexual conduct charges.
A candlelight vigil was held Wednesday night for an innocent bystander who was shot and killed in October.
