BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) - The 22-year-old man has been officially charged with open murder after allegedly killing a Battle Creek baby last week.
Depaul Brown was arraigned Monday afternoon on one count of homicide-open murder in the death of 17-month-old Jaleah Boyd. A judge denied him bond.
Emergency responders were called late Thursday afternoon to an apartment in the 900 block of North Avenue after Jaleah's babysitter said she was unresponsive. Efforts to revive the little girl were not successful.
Battle Creek Police told 24 Hour News 8 last week that Jaleah had elaborate bruising around her neck.
Police have not said exactly how they think Jaleah was killed. Monday, they were still awaiting autopsy results.
Brown is a habitual offender, authorities said. He is expected back in court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 13.
On Thursday, the medical examiner's office said CMU student Kelly Markatos died as a result of the eating disorder bulimia.
A memorial marker was unveiled for three young siblings who died in an apartment fire 10 months ago.
Battle Creek Police are investigating a fight caught on camera inside a middle school locker room.
