PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) - A woman was killed in her Portage residence and the suspect was arrested in Saginaw hours later.
Delores Mae Smith, 56, was found dead in her Devonshire Apartment, in the 5000 block of Meredith Street, just off Sprinkle Road, around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the Portage Police Department.
A preliminary investigation indicates she did not die of natural causes, and police labeled the case as a homicide. Autopsy results are pending.
Police detectives notified the Saginaw Police Department about a person of interest possibly being in the Saginaw area.
Saginaw police officers and Michigan State Police arrested 58-year-old Clinton Smith around 9:30 p.m. in the 1500 block of S. Warren Street in Saginaw, according to the Saginaw Police Department.
Arresting officers say they found Clinton Smith, who they said is the victim's ex-husband, hiding under a trailer after a brief manhunt.
"The suspect we currently have in custody did attempt to hide or flee from police when the arrest was made, when he was detained, but there was no physical altercation," Portage Lt. Thomas Palenik said.
Portage officers transported Clinton Smith to the Kalamazoo County Jail Friday morning. He is expected to be officially arraigned over the weekend.
Investigators said Friday they were still putting a case together for the Kalamazoo County prosecutor and that they had not yet established a motive.
Neighbors knew the victim as Dee.
"It had to be somebody she had to let in. Because if somebody tried to break in we would have heard it. I would have heard it. With your windows open, you hear everything," neighbor Leslie Shotwell told 24 Hour News 8.
Shotwell recalled the victim as "very nice" and an excellent neighbor.
"She would do anything for you. If I needed something, I would go down and she would say, 'Sure,'" Shotwell said. "It's terrible."
State records show Clinton Smith was arrested for misdemeanor domestic violence in 1996 and was arrested again in July 2013 for was were described as civil family offenses.
