KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - Two armed men tried to rob a family in the driveway of their Kalamazoo home, and the homeowner was shot when he struggled with one of the thieves.
Around 11:30 p.m. Friday, police said, the two men approached the family in the 4300 block of Chelten Avenue in Kalamazoo.
As the homeowner's 24-year-old girlfriend, his teenage nephew and his 4-year-old son were all sitting in a vehicle in his driveway, an armed man came up and demanded money.
That thief was distracted when he heard two gunshots fired by the second thief as he struggled with the homeowner.
Though he was shot once, he was able to overpower the armed robber. The second robber came in and physically assaulted the homeowner.
Both suspects ran away.
The woman, teen and child are unhurt.
The homeowner was taken to Bronson Hospital and treated for a single gunshot wound. He's since been released from the hospital.
The suspects are described as two black men. One is about 6-feet-5 and about 240 pounds. The other suspect is about 5-feet-7 with dreadlocks. Both were last seen wearing all dark clothing and masks.
Police said the suspects should be considered armed and dangerous.
If you have any information about the shooting you're asked to call the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
