KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - A 51-year-old Kalamazoo man fell off the roof of a church while trying to steal copper wire from the HVAC systems, police said.
The man fell 15 feet to a courtyard and is currently hospitalized. He could face charges as the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor's Office reviews the case.
A passerby walking his dogs called 911 around 2:46 a.m. Wednesday after seeing the suspicious suspect on the roof of the Abundant Faith Word Church, 1310 Bank St., in Kalamazoo. The caller said it looked like the suspicious man was attempting to break in through one of the vents on the roof.
Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers arrived, surrounded the church and used a ladder to access the roof.
Once on the roof, officers noticed the suspect had been stealing the wire, according to a news release. Officers then saw the suspect lying hurt in a small courtyard after he had fallen off the roof.
The only access to the courtyard was through a locked door from inside the building. So officers forced their way into the courtyard and tended to the suspect's injuries.
An ambulance transported him to Bronson Methodist Hospital where he is in stable condition.
