KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) - A young woman was arrested after she allegedly fled from police and crashed her vehicle, resulting in one of her two passengers being critically injured.
Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers responded around 1:40 a.m. Friday to an unidentified business in the 1300 block of Ravine Road on a report of people refusing to leave.
An officer arrived and saw two vehicles leaving the area.
One of the vehicles nearly struck the police car, according to a news release. The officer tried to stop this fleeing driver but the suspect sped away from the scene, traveling south on Douglas Avenue, police said.
“The officer discontinued attempts to stop the vehicle, and the suspect driver continued south at a high rate of speed,” police said.
The suspect crashed into a utility pole in the 1100 block of Douglas Avenue. The female driver ran from this scene, leaving the two passengers in the car.
The female passenger was uninjured, and the male passenger was transported to a hospital and listed in critical condition.
The 19-year-old driver from Kalamazoo was located and arrested for fleeing and eluding, and operating while intoxicated.
Police did not have information about the other vehicle that left the business.
