LAKE ODESSA, Mich. (WOOD) - A man died when his car collided with a train in Ionia County Monday night.
The victim has been identified as Michael Cole, 20, from Portland, according to a news release from Michigan State Police.
The incident happened around 8 p.m. at the railroad crossing on Jordan Lake Road in Lake Odessa.
Cole was driving north and the train was traveling eastbound, police said.
Witnesses told 24 Hour News 8 the car was pushed several hundred feet down the tracks from the crossing.
Photos from viewers at the scene show a CSX freight train was involved. Some show the car on fire, and black smoke rising into the air.
The train was stopped on the tracks for numerous hours, affecting several crossings including the one at Jordan Lake Road, as authorities investigated and crews cleared the scene.
The circumstances leading up to the crash are not yet known.
