IONIA, Mich. (WOOD) - Nobody escaped from an Ionia County prison Tuesday morning, but authorities continue to search for a suspicious person who ran away from authorities along a highway.
Someone spotted that suspicious person, who was wearing an orange jumpsuit similar to a prison outfit, trying to hitchhike along M-21 near the Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility in Ionia.
Michigan Department of Corrections officers were dispatched to the area, west of the city, around 11 a.m.
That person saw the officers and ran from the scene into an area described as rough terrain. Several police agencies, including K-9 units, were dispatched to the area to aid in the search.
It was later determined that this person was not an inmate, and that all of the inmates were accounted for at three area prisons.
But authorities still want to track down this person to see why he fled.
