GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the death of a Grand Rapids man.
John Dahlinger, 56, was found by his girlfriend Wednesday evening at his condo on Krislin Drive on Grand Rapids’ northeast side. Police said she called 911 and tried to revive him, but was unable to do so. Paramedics called to the scene also couldn’t revive Dahlinger.
Kent County Medical Examiner Stephen D. Cohle said Friday that Dahlinger died of blunt force trauma and had extensive injuries to his face and head. There was no evidence of a gunshot wound.
Cohle explained that Dahlinger suffered multiple blows to his face and that the nature of the injuries makes it impossible for him to tell if those blows came from a fist or some sort of club or weapon.
The injuries suggest a very personal, very enraged attack.
But who would want to kill Dahlinger remains a mystery. Friends and family have recalled him as a likeable, fun-loving man who took control of any room he was in.
Police are still investigating the homicide and haven’t released any information about a possible suspect or motive.
They did say Friday it doesn't appear to have been a random act.
Jim Nichols, a friend of Dahlinger who is acting as a spokesperson for the family, said Friday that the reward was being offered for information in the homicide.
"The reward is from an anonymous donor -- a very close friend of John's," Nichols said. "It is extremely important that you the public who may have seen anything at all -- driving in the street, walking down the road, anything that looks suspicious -- please contact the [Silent Observer] hotline and provide that information."
Nichols would not go into detail about the reward amount, other than to say that it was substantial.
Friday, Dahlinger’s family released a statement:
“The family of John Dahlinger is in a state of shock. We are all grieving for the loss of someone we loved and held dear. We need your help solving this case and finding the person or persons responsible for this horrible crime.
"Our family is offering up a reward to anyone with information that leads to the capture of the person or persons responsible.
"If you have any information or if you saw anything that might be out of the ordinary, please, we ask you to call the tip line of the Silent Observer.
