GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A witness to a shooting on the Grand Rapids southwest side said he saw a man trying to stem the flow of blood from his friend's abdomen.
The shooting happened around 6 p.m. Tuesday in the 700 block of Van Raalte Drive SW, which is near the intersection of Clyde Park Avenue SW and Grandville Avenue SW.
Grand Rapids police confirmed to 24 Hour News 8 that the male victim was shot in the abdomen.
Brian Oxford said he was painting in his house nearby when he heard two men arguing outside. Then he saw the driver of a vehicle pull a gun and start shooting.
"He just kept shooting at the guy. Even when he shot him, the guy got up trying to run, He kept shooting at him," Oxford said.
He said he heard at least seven shots.
"The guy was just trying to run, but he kept circling and circling him and he couldn't get out of the circle, you know, because the guy can make a bigger circle," Oxford said.
He called 911 immediately and ran down to help. The shooter drove off.
Oxford caught the aftermath on camera as the victim's friend tried to help stop the bleeding.
Oxford said he wants this violence to stop. Last month, police were in the area with a helicopter looking for a man who took off on foot from a traffic stop. Two months before, four people were shot in the New Roosevelt Bar down the street.
"Obviously, this guy didn't have a gun on him. You know, he's trying to get away from a guy who does. This is five or six o'clock. My kids could have been out here playing if it wasn't raining," Oxford said. "It's just crazy this is broad day light and the guy ain't caught yet."
The extent of the victim's injuries were unknown.
The vehicle has been described as a white Nissan with tinted windows. Police say they do have a vague description of the driver, but are not yet releasing it.
