GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A 19-year-old died at an Admiral gas station on Kalamazoo Avenue early Saturday morning after he was shot and then run over by a car.
The victim was identified by his mother as 19-year-old Luis Chavez Partee. The police, in a statement released to the media, identified him as Elmer Luis Chavez.
His mother told 24 Hour News 8 he was attending a Sweet 16 party at a dance club in the Town and County Mall on Kalamazoo Ave. for one of his friends. His brother, 20-year-old Jesse Partee, was also at that party.
According to Melissa Partee, an altercation broke out inside the dance club between Jesse and the men, she said, killed her son.
That fight spilled outside into the street when the assailants jumped Luis's brother Jesse. When Luis tried to help his brother, he and another person were shot.
Though he was wounded in the side, he was still alive and talking, his mother said. He got up and tried to run away, and was run over by a car.
Three other people, including his brother, were also hit by the car.
Partee told 24 Hour News 8, a medical examiner is conducting an autopsy to see which killed him; the bullet or the vehicle.
"My hope is that no other family would have to go through this," she said. "That's what my hope is. No one should ever have to lose a child -- this is wrong."
More than 100 people filled the yard at Godwin Heights High School Saturday night to remember him.
Luis Partee's friends remembered him as an entertainer, the life of the party.
"When he danced at the parties, the whole light was on Luis," his friend Kenny Jones said. "It wasn't a party without Luis."
His friends teared up as they recalled memories of the 19-year-old they called "Lu-Lu".
"We're going to have to be strong for him because he's not going to want us to cry," Miranda Martin said. "We just gotta stay strong for Luis."
"He was there one minute and the next minute he's gone," Ariyana Medina said. "It's so hard."
There were two vehicles - possibly a white Trailblazer and a white Cadillac - involved in the incident, his mother said, and she believes those responsible are in a gang.
The family is looking for help with burial costs and have set up a fund at Lake Michigan Credit Union in the name of Luis Chavez Partee.
