GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A maintenance worker was injured Tuesday morning after falling down a 10-foot shaft.
The per diem employee with Holland Home's senior residential facility on Raybrook Street SE had removed a large grate covering the shaft, which contained HVAC equipment for the building, just before 9 a.m.
He took one step back, apparently not realizing how close his foot was to the opening, and fell to the bottom of the approximately 4-by-4 shaft.
Technical rescue crews from Grand Rapids and Walker fire departments were called to the scene. Both teams have training and equipment to deal with people trapped in tight spots.
The victim suffered broken bones, but is expected to be okay.
Is tonight the night? Maybe it's tomorrow. Or even Sunday.
Two other people, who were inside the residence at the time, escaped safely.
