GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The Grand Rapids Police Department Major Case Team is investigating a homicide after a woman found her boyfriend dead at his home.
John Dahlinger, 56, died of blunt force trauma, police said. His death has been ruled a homicide. Friday morning, Kent County Medical Examiner Stephen D. Cohle said Dahlinger had extensive injuries to his face and head. He did not find any gunshot wounds.
Dahlinger's body was found at his home in the 2000 block of Krislin Drive NE near Dean Lake Avenue NE, north of Knapp Street.
Officers arrived around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday and were told by Dahlinger's girlfriend that she came home and found Dahlinger unresponsive. She said she called 911 and tried to revive him, according to a news release.
An EMS crew arrived but could not save Dahlinger.
Police have not yet provided any information about a possible suspect or motive.
Residents in the quiet Maple Grove Condominiums neighborhood where Dahlinger lived were shocked and concerned Thursday.
Marty Staal lives across the street from Dahlinger, but never got to know him well. He watched Wednesday night as police cars and medical personnel arrived at Dahlinger's home.
"There was this man I had never seen before standing by the garage door and he said that John had been severely assaulted and was dead," Staal said.
He asked police about the case, but they didn't give him any more information.
"I am not concerned that this is some burglar coming in here. I think this is something personal, but that is just my observation, or my intuition," Staal said.
Staal said Dahlinger had recently accepted a position as a board member of the Maple Grove Neighborhood Association.
Dahlinger also served on the board of directors of Paws with a Cause, which said he was a great advocate of that organization.
He leaves behind two sons.
