GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A 77-year-old Grand Rapids woman said she was attacked in her home in the middle of the night.
Grand Rapids police responded to the woman's home in the 1100 block of Worden Street SE around 9 a.m. Thursday.
The 77-year-old woman said she went to sleep after midnight. Around 2 a.m. Thursday, she awoke to find herself being assaulted. She was severely beaten and lost consciousness.
When she woke up Thursday morning, she called police.
She was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Her current condition is unknown.
A motive has not yet been established in the case. Police declined to say whether the woman had been robbed.
The victim also said that about 4 p.m. Wednesday, she went to the store. When she returned home with groceries, a white male she didn't know asked her if she needed help getting her bags inside. She declined.
Police are trying to identify and speak with that man. Anyone with information is asked to call GRPD at 616.456.3604 or Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.
Police say the victim recalls few details. They hope she remembers more as she recovers.
Neighbors who say family never came by to check on the woman and that and she lived alone. They say they think that's why she was targeted.
"She was a really old lady by herself. No one bothered to be here for her. That's a little disturbing," Tim Ross, who has been the woman's neighbor for eight years, said. "There's never any traffic here, never. I've yet to see one person stop by her house to visit her or anything like that."
Neighbors say police better catch whoever attacked the woman before they do.
"I hope they catch who did it 'cause hanging out around here, we find out you did it, you'll have a problem, truly," Ross said.
