GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A former Grand Rapids Christian teacher faces sexual assault charges after allegedly having sex with a student.
Mark Vogel, 33, was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. He was booked in the Kent County jail and released on May 11.
Court records show investigators allege Vogel had sex with a student at least two times. The alleged incidents were in December 2006 and March 2007 and happened at the car pool lot at Alden Nash Avenue and I-96.
Grand Rapids Christian Schools Superintendent Tom DeJonge said the district was notified of the alleged relationship in summer of 2012. The district immediately notified law enforcement and began its own investigation.
The district's investigation has found no other incidents or allegations. District officials believe all incidents happened off school property.
Vogel worked at the district full-time through the end of the 2008 school year. He signed on as a part-time science instructor for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school year. He then moved away.
The district notified high school parents in October of 2012. Letters were sent out to the entire district Tuesday.
The district also spoke with employees and high school students about these situations, hoping to make students comfortable with coming forward with any concerns.
