GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - As the new school year approaches, D.A. Blodgett - St. John's is holding its seventh annual Backpack and School Supply Drive.
The organization says the drive will provide 500 "abused or neglected children" with a new backpack filled with school supplies, according to a Wednesday release.
The children are in foster or residential care, adoption, KidsFirst Emergency Shelter, the Kent School Services Network, or the Big Brothers and Big Sister programs.
Among the items needed:
- Backpacks for both elementary and high school students
- Colored pencils, crayons and markers
- Pencils and erasers, pens, and highlighters
- Pencil boxes
- Glue sticks
Donations will be accepted until Aug. 15 at D.A. Blodgett - St. John's on Leonard Street NE.
D.A. Blodgett - St. John's says 23% of Kent County children live below the poverty level.
