RUTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Three people were hospitalized after a single-car crash southwest of Hastings Sunday afternoon.
The crash happened around 3:45 p.m. at M-43 and Goodwill Road in Rutland Township, according to Michigan State Police. MSP says the car left the road and struck a tree.
Driver Derrick McElhaney, 23, of Delton and passenger Corey Justice, 24, of Clarksville, were taken to Pennock Hospital in Hastings by ambulance. Passenger Faith Allen, 21, of Lake Odessa was taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids via Aero Med.
Speed, alcohol and drug use all being investigated as possible contributing factors, MSP said.
None of the three people in the car were wearing their seat belts, MSP said.
A stretch of M-43 in the area was shut down in both directions due to the crash for a time.
The Barry County Sheriff's Department, the Hastings Fire Department, the Barry Township Fire Department, Mercy Ambulance, Aero Med, and the Michigan Department of Transportation assisted MSP at the scene.
