HASTINGS, Mich. (WOOD) - A Hastings woman is behind bars after police said she broke into someone's home and then tried to use the excuse of needing a restroom when she was caught.
It happened on Oct. 16 at a home in the 700 block of S. Church Street.
A relative of the homeowner told police that when she returned to the home, she saw a pair of gloves and a bag full of items on a chair, and heard something like footsteps.
The relative began to look around the house, and found Kathy Jean Weinert, 43, upstairs, hiding in a closet.
When the relative opened the door to the closet, she said Weinert walked out past her, claiming she had to use the bathroom, authorities said. Weinert then walked out of the house.
Police later caught up with Weinert and arrested her. When officers interviewed her, she admitted she entered the home without permission from the homeowner.
Weinert was charged with home invasion and taken to the Barry County Jail where she's currently lodged on a $100,000 bond.
Fred Glespie was found not guilty in the death of three children who died in an apartment fire.
Police are looking for the suspect in an armed robbery that occurred at a gas station in Plainwell Thursday night.
The rink will be open that day from 3-9 p.m.
