PLAINWELL, Mich. (WOOD) - 24 Hour News 8 has learned details of what information police used to obtain an arrest warrant for Kelly Laker, a special education teacher at Plainwell High School.
According to a probable cause hearing, Laker was seen kissing the forehead of one of his students as he consoled her in a back room attached to his classroom.
When police interviewed that student, she told them more details of what had been happening between herself and Laker.
The student told the interviewing police officer that Laker would console her because she had test-taking anxiety.
The student would show up before school and begin to work on homework. Laker would allegedly kiss her on the lips during that time in the back room.
Laker allegedly picked up the student and would tell her to wrap her legs around him and French kiss him.
Laker also allegedly would take the student's hand and place it on his private area.
According to the student's interview with police, the contact between herself and Kelly happened on more than one occasion.
Laker also allegedly told the student he wanted to have sex with her and wrote the date "12-12-2014" -- the student's graduation date -- on a whiteboard, and told her that he wanted to sleep with her then.
The girl's mother also allegedly found romantic letters written from Laker to her daughter in her daughter's bedroom.
Laker was arrested by the Plainwell Department of Public Safety on May 30.
An email about the incident was sent to parents in the district on May 31. School officials and police were notified of the situation on March 15.
Laker is scheduled to be arraigned on the charge in an Allegan County courtroom on June 10.
