PLAINWELL, Mich. (WOOD) - A teacher from Allegan County was arraigned Monday morning in connection with an alleged relationship with a student.
Kelly Laker, a special education teacher at Plainwell High School, was charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct and obstruction of justice.
The allegations against Laker surfaced on March 15 and he was placed on immediate administrative leave. Parents in the district were notified May 31. The Plainwell Department of Public Safety arrested Laker on May 30.
The student told the interviewing police officer that Laker would console her because she had test-taking anxiety. Laker would allegedly kiss her on the lips during that time in a back room, according to a probable cause hearing. Laker allegedly picked up the student and would tell her to wrap her legs around him and French kiss him. Laker also allegedly would take the student's hand and place it on his private area. The student said the contact between herself and Laker happened on more than one occasion. Laker also allegedly told the student he wanted to have sex with her.
A preliminary hearing for Laker is scheduled for June 19 in Allegan County District Court.
