CASCO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A Spring Lake semi-truck driver was killed in a head-on crash with another semi that shut down a portion of I-196 in southern Allegan County for eight hours Wednesday.
Alan Chase, 38, of Spring Lake, was killed in the wreck, Michigan State Police said Wednesday evening.
It happened around 6 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the highway near the 25 mile marker in Casco Towship, north of South Haven.
Police at the scene told 24 Hour News 8 a southbound box truck driver lost control of his rig, for an unknown reason, causing the truck to cross the median, go through the median cable barrier and strike a northbound flat bed truck.
Chase, the driver of the southbound truck, died at the scene.
The driver and passenger in the northbound truck suffered minor injuries and were transported to a hospital as a precaution. Both were later released.
In addition, one lane of southbound I-196 between 71st Street and 107th Avenue was also closed due to a separate crash that happened shortly after the first wreck. All lanes reopened Wednesday afternoon.
Police are investigating a report of a home invasion, but say there are inconsistencies.
A Kalamazoo County sheriff's deputy will not face criminal sexual conduct charges.
A candlelight vigil was held Wednesday night for an innocent bystander who was shot and killed in October.
