24 Hour News 8 web staff - GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) -- A man accused of setting a fire at a fireworks store in Wyoming in addition to several other crimes has taken a plea deal.
Casey Marvin, 34, of Wyoming pleaded no contest on Thursday to third-degree arson and unlawful driving away of an automobile in connection to the fire at GS Fireworks on 44th Street SW near Burlingame Avenue on July 5. As part of the plea deal, charges of carjacking, first-degree arson and preparation to burn property were dropped.
In a second case, Marvin pleaded no contest to first-degree home invasion, second-degree arson and third-degree fleeing police in connection to a break-in and fire at a Wyoming home also on July 5.
According to court documents, a witness saw Marvin leave GS Fireworks and light a firework back into the store the morning after the Fourth of July. He then got into the witness' car and demanded his car. When the witness refused, they got into a physical altercation, court documents show.
Marvin then went to a nearby apartment complex and lit a bag of stuffed animals on fire on a balcony before stealing a vehicle, according to court documents. The owners of the vehicle had left it running as they back inside their apartment to call police about the fire at the firework store.
He then crashed the vehicle into a tree on 44th Street and allegedly tried to set it on fire by putting a burning rag in the gas tank.
Court documents say after the crash, Marvin broke into a house on Oriole Street, stole some items and then started a fire inside the home before getting away in a stolen car.
Police later found Marvin driving the wrong way on 36th Street near Burlingame. Officers then rammed the stolen vehicle in order to stop it. Marvin was taken away in an ambulance.
Marvin is expected to be sentenced on Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. for both cases.
