Teen's body found near rape suspect's mom's house

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The body of a 16-year-old Grand Rapids girl was found less than a mile from the home of her accused rapist's mother.

It has been nearly two months since Mujey Dumbuya's body was founded in the wooded area near Blakeslee Street and Prairie Avenue in Kalamazoo.

That's about a six-minute walk from where police say Quinn James' mother was living on Summit Avenue west of Douglas Avenue.

The 42-year-old James, who was ordered Wednesday to stand trial for allegedly raping Dumbuya repeatedly last summer, hasn't been charged in connection to her death but is considered a person of interest.

"Right now we are still open and active with this (Dumbuya murder) investigation," Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Capt. Shannon Bagley told 24 Hour News 8 Thursday. "Very happy with how this investigation is going."

Bagley said he was optimistic that investigators would be prepared to request charges within the next couple of weeks. The case will be prosecuted in Kent County. The prosecutor's office is already involved, as is the Grand Rapids Police Department.

Dumbuya was last alive seen Jan. 24 when she left her home to catch a bus to East Kentwood High School, where she was a student. That was the day after James learned she was going to testify against him in the rape case. A pair of walkers discovered the teenager's body in Kalamazoo four days later.

Her death certificate shows Dumbuya died of asphyxia including strangulation. In court Wednesday, the 17-year-old nephew of James' girlfriend — who was living with his aunt and James — testified James choked him and his aunt, saying that's why he was scared of James.

James' girlfriend is charged with perjury in the murder case.

It was also revealed in court that GRPD has been listening to James' phone calls from the jail in connection to the homicide investigation. Wyoming and Kentwood police are also helping with the investigation.

James' juvenile criminal record, obtained Thursday by 24 Hour News 8, says that in 1990, when he was 15, he was charged with armed robbery, holding a woman against her will and assaulting her with a weapon. It was recommended he be moved to a private facility and a judge ordered him tried as an adult. He was convicted of armed robbery in 1991 and sent to a state prison.

Before that case, he was also accused of stealing cars and assaulting an officer at the Woodland Mall in Kentwood.
