WEST DENNIS, Mass. (CNN/WCVB) - A Massachusetts man is facing a number of charges after he allegedly slammed his pickup truck into a West Dennis convenience store.
It came out of nowhere: a pickup truck crashing through Tedeschi's on Route 28 around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.
A customer narrowly escaped injury by jumping over the counter. What happens next is even more shocking: The driver tries to back out but keeps ramming into a post.
The crash woke up Damon McCaaron, who lives five houses away.
“I heard a loud crash and some squealing tires, and I knew something was amiss,” he said. “So I ran out into my front yard to see a pickup truck entering and exiting the building.”
Eventually, the driver was able to back out and speed away.
“It headed off west on Route 28, and you could actually hear debris falling off of his truck,” said McCaaron.
“There was some debris on Route 28 in Dennis and into Yarmouth,” said police. “It was found by some Yarmouth officers.”
Police eventually tracked down the Dodge truck and driver three miles away in Yarmouth.
The truck, with a Purple Heart license plate from Texas, is now impounded at Dennis Police Headquarters.
And you can see that despite crashing into Tedeschi's, there's relatively minor damage to the truck.
As for the building? Well, that's another story. Tedeschi's is closed.
Swan River Liquors right next door opened an hour late Sunday, but amazingly there is no damage inside – not a single broken bottle.
“Nope, we lucked out big time,” said a liquor store worker. “The alcohol fairy was with us today.”
The suspect is identified as 32-year-old Christopher Sprague.
He's charged with vandalism, leaving the scene of an accident and negligence. He's been released on his own recognizance.
