DETROIT (WOOD) - Second-term Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero clinched the Democraticnomination for governor Tuesday night, announcing his victorybefore supporters at the Atheneum Suite Hotel in downtownDetroit.
Bernero said his opponent, House Speaker Andy Dillon of RedfordTownship, had called to concede.
In accepting his party's nomination, Bernero said he would sidewith workers against big corporations and Wall Street -- familiarthemes in his primary campaign. He also said education and economicdevelopment were key to the state's future and touted his record asmayor.
"I think it means he excites the voters enough to show up,"Bernero backer and Kalamazoo County commissioner Brian Johnsonsaid.
Some critics have charged Bernero will be a tougher sell thanhis opponent in the general election because Bernero can't appealto moderate voters. But Johnson said Bernero does have that appealand also can motivate the Democratic base to get out inNovember.
"Virg Bernero is tough and determined to fight for the thingsthat matter most to Michigan families -- diversifying Michigan'seconomy, educating our citizens, and protecting people as we movethrough these tough times," Gov. Jennifer Granholm said in astatement late Tuesday night. "I look forward to working with himto continue moving Michigan forward."
Bernero started his Tuesday by meeting with workers at a GMplant in Lansing, according to the campaign, before voting.
Other stops were set in Detroit and Warren. The Democraticcandidate was a state lawmaker and county commissioner prior toserving as mayor beginning in 2006.
