GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Today is the official release of Bells most popular brew, Oberon! Many Grand Rapids area bars will have Oberon on tap when they open today at 11 a.m. and you can find Oberon wherever beer is sold throughout West Michigan.
Oberon is a wheat ale with a mild citrus finish that is very light and easy to drink outside in the warmer months. The affordability and flavor make it not only popular to drink, but very easy to incorporate in cooking and baking as well. West Michigan Beer blogger, Kelli Williams , shares her Oberon Orange Ginger Bar recipe.
Oberon Orange-Ginger Bars (makes two dozen bars)
2/3 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup Bell's Oberon Beer
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 teaspoon orange zest
1 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
1/4 cup Bell's Oberon Beer
1/4 cup orange juice
4 teaspoons butter, melted
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon orange zest
In a large bowl, cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, fold in beer. Combine the flour, ginger, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, orange zest and salt; add to creamed mixture and mix well. Stir in raisins.
Spread mixture into a greased 13" x 9" baking pan. Bake at 350° for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
Combine the glaze ingredients until smooth; spread over warm bars. Cool on a wire rack before cutting into bars.
Another beer that is making it's debut this week is Founders KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout). This imperial stout is brewed with a massive amount of coffee and chocolates, then aged in oak bourbon barrels for an entire year to make sure wonderful bourbon undertones come through in the finish. The beer officially hits stores in Michigan on Monday, April 1, but you can get an early taste at Founders release party this Saturday to celebrate the newest brew of the season!
