(CNN) - It is a slightly different scenario then what normally happens in La Joya, Texas.

A person, carrying a load of marijuana, somehow getting their car stuck in the mud.

"The smugglers were coming east and over shot the intersection and ended up in a ditch," said Joe Cantu with La Joya police.

Police said a resident called, telling them there was an abandoned SUV on the side of the highway. When police arrived, they ran the plates and found it was a vehicle that was stolen out of the nearby city of Pharr. They also found over 200 pounds of marijuana in the back.

"We check the vehicle and there were 16 small packages about eight or nine pounds each and three large packages of marijuana," said Cantu.

Police said, they believe, there was another vehicle following the Dodge Durango, a common practice among smugglers.

"They usually have a scout finding out where the officers are at or they have someone there, if they run, to have someone there distracting the officer," said Cantu. "We believe in this case both vehicles were traveling together and one got stuck and they had to get this stuff out."

They said, by the looks of it, there was about 1,000 pounds of marijuana in in the vehicle.

"The probably unloaded this vehicle and put it into another vehicle," said Cantu. "The driver and the load probably got away. We estimate it at thousand pounds or so."

Police said this is the second stolen vehicle from the Pharr area that they have recovered in 2010. La Joya police said they have already seized more than 3,000 pounds of marijuana so far in 2010.
