Runner fights through exercise-induced asthma

Says she "wants to keep playing"

SAUGATUCK, Mich. (AP) - A West Michigan high school junior hopes to qualify for several state track events while fighting exercise-induced asthma.

The Holland Sentinel reports that Melissa Francis keeps going nonstop, whether it's on the basketball court or the track.

She could qualify in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, the 100-meter dash and the 4x800 relay, despite the asthma which has left the Saugatuck teen lying on the basketball court unable to breathe.

Francis says she pushes herself because she wants "to keep playing" and wants her team to win.

Exercise-induced asthma is triggered by vigorous or prolonged exercise or physical exertion. Muscle bands around airways are sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity and react by contracting, which narrow the airways.

Francis was diagnosed as a freshman.
