Wardrobe | Twinkle Toes: Tips for healthy feet

Keeping your feet sweet during the summertime isn’t easy. Sandals, flip-flops and the heat can take a toll and can leave you with some unsavory soles.

I love a good pedicure, but daily care is imperative for keeping your feet looking nice. This goes for both guys and gals.

Guys, if pedicures and spas aren’t your thing, then these simple tips are quite easy to do yourself.

Check out more DIY beauty products from Twinkle.

Moisturize

Ongoing moisturizing is key to keeping your feet healthy all year round. Make sure you are not only moisturizing your skin, but also your feet whenever you get out of the shower.

A good oatmeal-based lotion or moisturizer will help exfoliate your skin while adding the moisture you need to keep your feet soft.

For a great DIY foot mask, smash a banana with equal parts honey and lemon juice. Apply to your foot and put on a thick sock on before you sleep. Wash off with warm water in the morning.

Exfoliate

A good sugar scrub chock full of oils, like olive or coconut, is also great for scrubbing off dead skin and bringing your feet back to life.

Take some time to give yourself a foot scrub on days when your feet have been exposed to the elements. Soak your feet in hot water with almond oil or baby oil for 30 minutes, and then give them a nice, slow scrub. Once you’re done, moisturize.

Another great way to exfoliate is with a pumice bar. Soak feet as instructed above and then gently scrub any areas that need treated with a pumice bar.

Replenish

Don’t forget that a good diet, exercise and lots of water are key to keeping not only your feet soft and in good shape, but also for your skin.

You can avoid cracked heels or dry feet by enriching your diet with foods containing Vitamin E – green vegetables, cereals, whole-grain products and nuts. Foods rich in calcium and iron are also helpful.

Most importantly, treat your feet right. If you have a hard day or spend a lot of the summer with your feet exposed, take some time each night to replenish, moisturize and exfoliate. Not only will your feet look great, but they will feel great, too.
