Spartan Stores recalls 150+ items

Precautionary for possible listeria contamination

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Spartan Stores is recalling more than a 150 items because of possible listeria contamination.

Listeria monocytogenes
is a bacteria that primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Eating contaminated food may cause listeriosis, a serious infection that causes fever, muscle aches and gastrointestinal problems, the CDC says. It has been known to lead to miscarriage and stillbirth in pregnant women.

The recall was issued after a routine surface swabbing by the US Food and Drug Administration at a kitchen that pre-cooks some deli foods. Samples taken tested positive for listeria.

Spartan Stores says there have been no products identified as having come into contact with the bacteria and the recall is precautionary.

Kent County Health Department spokeswoman Lisa LaPlante says they have had no reports of listeria since May.

The recalled deli items were distributed to Family Fare, D&W Fresh Markets, Glen's, VG's and other independent supermarkets across Michigan, according to Grand Rapids-based Spartan Stores.

See a full list of the recalled items at the Spartan Stores website.

Anyone concerned about illness is encouraged to call his or her doctor. Products named in the recall should be thrown away or returned for a refund.

Spartan Stores Vice President of Corporate Affairs Jeanne Norcross released this statement Wednesday:

"Spartan Stores is seeking precautionary steps to ensure the highest degree of safety and quality to our customers. No products have been identified as coming into contact with the listeria monocytogenes organism and Spartan Stores has received no reports of illness associated with the consumption of these products. Consumers with questions about the recall may contact Spartan Stores’ Consumer Affairs at 1-800-451-8500 from 8 am to 5 pm EST."
