QINHUANGDAO, China (AP) - Claressa Shields has earned a shot to box for gold at the London Games.
USA Boxing spokeswoman Julie Goldsticker confirmed Friday that Shields qualified for the Olympics by being a top-two finisher from the Americas at the world women's boxing championships in China.
The 17-year-old, 165-pound middleweight from Flint, Mich., called her coach, Jason Crutchfield earlier in the day to share the news. She is a junior at Flint Northwestern High School.
Shields won a title at the American Boxing Confederation's Women's Elite Continental Championships last month.
