GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Former Detroit Red Wing Kevin Miller denies he owes a $1.6 million judgment to an insurance company for a hit during a 2000 Swiss league game that ended a player's career.
Court records show Miller elbowed Andrew McKim in the back during a championship game in Switzerland. Miller was assessed a five-minute, high-sticking penalty, and later given an eight-game suspension by the league.
McKim suffered a severe concussion and neck injuries.
Miller was sued for $1 million, which increased to $1.6 million with interest and costs, and lost the lawsuit.
Now the insurance company is asking a US court to enforce the judgment.
Miller is fighting the case, saying the Swiss court didn't give him a fair trial.
Miller played college hockey at Michigan State University from 1984-1988. His professional career spanned 16 years, and included three seasons with the Red Wings and two seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins.
