He started every regular season game in 2011

LOS ANGELES (WOOD) - Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford won the Best Comeback Athlete award at the ESPYs on Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Upon winning the award, Stafford stated the city of Detroit was "on a comeback of its own." He thanked his teammates as he accepted the award.

Stafford won because of his battle back from major injuries sustained in his first two seasons as a professional.

In 2011, he started every regular season game for the Lions and led the team to its first playoff appearance in more than a decade. Stafford passed for 5,038 yards last season.

He was named Comeback Player of the Year by the Associated Press in February.
