PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - The father of New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi was remembered as a hard-working bricklayer at his funeral in Illinois.
Girardi and general manager Brian Cashman attended the funeral Monday for Jerry Girardi. He died Oct. 6 at age 81 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's.
During the funeral at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Peoria, Father Larry Zurek said Jerry Girardi used hard work and love to build a successful family.
Joe Girardi occasionally dabbed his eyes but otherwise sat quietly with his wife, Kim, their three children and other family members.
The funeral was held on an off day in the American League Championship Series. A day earlier, Joe Girardi was ejected from a loss that leaves the Yankees trailing the Detroit Tigers 2-0 in the series.
Game 3 of the ALCS is set for 8 p.m. Tuesday in Detroit. The Tigers send Justin Verlander to the mound to face Phil Hughes of the Yankees. The game will be televised on TBS.
