CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - The Fennville boys basketball team attended the The 2011 ESPYs in California.
The team was nominated for the Best Moment of 2011 Award -- a moment that captured the attention of people nationwide. However, the honor went to the Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay for his playoff no-hitter.
The Blackhawks were nominated for their playoff run without star player Wes Leonard. The 16-year-old collapsed and died of an enlarged heart after hitting the game-winning shot in a game in March, clinching a 20-0 regular season. The team continued on in the playoffs, winning three games and the Class C district championship. Schoolcraft, the eventual state champion, beat Fennville in the regional semifinals.
The team departed from the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Cascade Township early Tuesday morning, en route to Los Angeles for the award show.
The ESPYs aired live on ESPN Wednesday night.
