Griffin in Teletubby outfit at DUI stop

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - An underage Grand Rapids Griffins player was wearing a Teletubby costume and in possession of a teammate's identification when he was arrested in a "super drunk" case last month.

Riley Sheahan twice registered a blood-alcohol level of .30 percent when tested in jail following his arrest on Oct. 29, police confirmed for 24 Hour News 8. He was driving a Jeep Wrangler the wrong way on a one-way street in downtown Grand Rapids when officers pulled over his vehicle.

Police say the 20-year-old center from St. Catharines, Ontario was wearing the costume of a purple Teletubby known as Tinky Winky during the stop.

Sheahan was also charged with providing officers with false information at the traffic stop.

He had identification of 23-year-old teammate Brendan Smith in the front of his wallet at the time of the arrest, police said. Sheahan admitted to police he used the ID to get into bars. Sheahan's own ID was in the back of his wallet, police later discovered.

Sheahan pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Nov. 6.

The "super drunk" charge carries a penalty of 180 days in jail and possible deportation.

Sheahan's next court hearing is scheduled for Dec. 13.

Sheahan, the Detroit Red Wings' No. 1 draft pick in 2010, has three goals and two assists for the Griffins in 15 games during his first professional season.

When he was a freshman at Notre Dame in 2010, according to The Detroit News, he was arrested for public intoxication and alcohol consumption as a minor.

Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill says Sheahan is "getting help right now and will continue to get help."
