GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - It was the first game of a 25-game professional tryout for 16-year NHL veteran Mike Knuble. The former Red Wing , Michigan Wolverine and Grand Rapids native played in front of a hometown crowd for the first time since his high school days at East Kentwood back in 1990.
Knuble found himself on a line with the only other Grand Rapids native to play for the Griffins, and former Wolverine himself, Luke Glendening. Knuble notched his first AHL point with an assist to Tomas Tatar late in the second period.
After 60 minutes of regulation, the Griffins and Barons needed overtime and a shootout to decide this one. Grand Rapids scored on two of it's first three tries to skate away with a 5-4 win. The third straight victory increases their first-place lead in the Midwest Division to nine points over Chicago.
Grand Rapids play again at the Van Andel Arena Friday against Houston.
Watch the highlights and hear what Mike Knuble had to say after the game.
