JENISON, Mich. (WOOD) - Jenison forfeited its win over Grandville in the opening week of the high school football season because an academically ineligible student played in the game.
Jenison's coach was not aware of the ineligibility, a school official said, which was discovered three days after the Aug. 24 game.
Jenison High School Principal Brandon Graham told 24 Hour News 8 that coaches checked with the counselor's office and confirmed the student's summer school grades were not good enough.
"The integrity of our program is very important to us," Graham said. "We felt that with that knowledge we needed to make sure that we let the governing body know that we accepted the responsibility for having an academically ineligible player on the field."
The school reported the ineligibility to the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
A parent told 24 Hour News 8 the student in question is a defensive lineman on the team.
Right now, school officials are working to make the student eligible for graduation, which they say is their first priority for all student athletes.
