Christian beats OLSM in OT for D3 crown

West Catholic falls short in D5 vs Portland

DETROIT (WOOD) - Joel Schipper kicked a field goal in overtime to give the Grand Rapids Christian Eagles the Division 3 state title in a thrilling 40-37 win over Orchard Lake St. Mary's.

Christian stopped OLSM in the first overtime when they deflected a 4th-down pass in the end zone. On the very next play, Schipper kicked the title-clinching field goal.

Grand Rapids Christian took an early 7-0 lead on a Seth McIntosh touchdown run against Orchard Lake St. Mary's in the title game, but OLSM came back quickly to tie it.

In the second quarter, Christian regained the lead, 14-7, on a long touchdown pass.

With 4:42 left in the second quarter, Alex VandeVusse turned the corner and scored a 47-yard touchdown to give Christian a 20-7 lead, The extra point was not good.

OLSM came right back with a 33-yard touchdown pass to cut the Christian lead to 20-14 with 1:42 left in the half.

Then OLSM had a long drive to open the second half and scored a touchdown, but missed the extra point. With 8 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter, the score was 20-20.

Christian regained the lead on a touchdown run to make it 27-20. But OLSM drove right back down the field only to fumble at the goal line.

Christian recovered the fumble, but VandeVusse was tackled in the end zone for a safety to make the score 27-22.

With 9:37 to play, OLSM took their first lead of the game on a touchdown and successful 2-point conversion to make it 30-27.

McIntosh scored his second TD for Christian less than two minutes later, a 32-yard burst that put the Eagles on top 34-30.

However, OLSM scored to make it 37-34.

Christian had one more chance to take the lead as time wound down, but settled for a field goal with :04 left to tie the game, 37-37, sending it into overtime.

OLSM got the ball first in the overtime, but could not score. Christian wasted no time and went directly for a field goal to win. Schipper's kick sailed directly through the uprights for the win.

Grand Rapids West Catholic came up just short against Portland in the Division 5 state title game at Ford Field.

Portland scored first, but missed the extra point. 6-0 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, West Catholic drove deep, but a pass was picked off in the end zone and returned by Portland to the 6. On the next play, Portland scored on a 94-yard pass play. A 2-point conversion attempt failed. 12-0 Portland.

With 1:02 left in the first half, West Catholic scored on a touchdown run. Extra point good. 12-7 Portland leads.

It remained 12-7 until the 4th quarter, when West Catholic tacked on a safety, It was 12-9 with 9 minutes to play.

With a minute to play, West Catholic had 4th and goal around the Portland 10, but could not score. The final: Portland 12, West Catholic 9.

In the earlier Saturday games:

(AP) — Eric Kostreva ran for 182 yards and scored all three of his team's touchdowns, and Ishpeming beat Detroit Loyola 20-14 on Saturday at Ford Field to win the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 7 state championship.

Kostreva's third touchdown came with 10:36 left on a 3-yard run and erased Detroit Loyola's 14-12 lead. Kostreva also ran in for the two-point conversion.

Keymonn'e Gabriel had 129 yards rushing for Detroit Loyola and scored a touchdown.

On Friday:
