GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Green Bay Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings hauled in four passes -- two for touchdown -- Sunday to lift his team against the Pittsburgh Steelers and win Super Bowl XLV.
The Kalamazoo native returned to Green Bay with his teammates to celebrate and party, but on Monday, his proud parents flew back to West Michigan, landing at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport.
Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell called Greg's father, Greg Jennings Sr., this morning. Hopewell said he would love to set up a parade, or some type of function to honor Greg, once he gets back to Kalamazoo, Jennings Sr. said.
The former Western Michigan standout is expected back sometime later this week, or early next week.
Jennings Sr. held up a newspaper with the words "World Champs" in big print across the front, as he spoke to 24 Hour News 8 with his wife, Gwen Jennings, and their grandson Jalen.
Greg's relatives were basking in the victory, unable to get the previous night's events out of their minds.
"So, to really be there -- I mean, it was just a rush," Gwen Jennings said. "It was a joy. It was just amazing. It really was."
And for a family that was supposed to fly to Dallas last Tuesday, but didn't arrive until Saturday due to the blizzard, seeing Greg catch two touchdown passes in the biggest game of his life made all the delays worthwhile.
When asked what was going through his mind during the game, Jennings Sr. said he does reflect on the past -- from Greg's time at Kalamazoo Central and Western Michigan until now.
"I think about that all the time and I said, wow," he told 24 Hour News 8. "When he caught his first touchdown, I said it was different than the regular season, because this was the Super Bowl, and anytime you can do something great in the Super Bowl, it catapults your experience and everything you can dream of. And I know it was coming. He saved the best for last.
"We did it. He did it. They did it."
