GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A documentary on Wes Leonard aired Sunday morning on ESPN.
The ESPN crew filmed the Fennville team just days after Leonard's death. The junior standout died March 3 at Holland Hospital after hitting the game-winning shot for the Blackhawks just hours earlier. He suffered cardiac arrest due to an enlarged heart, doctors said later.
The overtime win lifted his team to an undefeated regular season. Fennville went on to play in the postseason without their star point guard, and made it to the regional semifinals before falling to Schoolcraft -- which later went on to win the Class C championship at Breslin Center.
It seemed the entire town of Fennville came out to support the Blackhawks, who played with heavy hearts in front of at-capacity crowds at Hope College's DeVos Fieldhouse.
The ESPN documentary includes interviews with Leonard's coach, family and girlfriend.
