ROTHBURY, Mich. (WOOD) - Girl Talk had everyone talking Friday night.
Thousands poured out to Sherwood Court to watch mash-up style remix artist Gregg Michael Gillis, better known by his stage name, Girl Talk. Known for mixing a dozen or more unauthorized samples from different songs, Girl Talk had mainsteam music fans geeked to hear some familiar tunes.
Mixes ranged from Radiohead paired with Snoop Dogg, to M.I.A. mixed with Neil Diamond. Fans sang along and danced the night away to Girl Talk's mix of Top 40 and karaoke hits.
More than 5,000 were in attendance and the vibe could not be described as anything but crazy. My 360 degree view was: An insane lights show in the front, risky business to my right and left, and directly behind me - the bobbing of almost 5,000 singing heads. It was evident that the energy at this show was going to be unlike anything I'd ever experienced. I must say, my expectations were met.
After Gillis pulled almost 50 people on stage to dance for the remainder of his set, you could feel a sense of connection with the audience. Everyone seemed to want to dance on stage in front of thousands.
About an hour and half later, the energy was just as intense, and concertgoers were treated to an electrifying lights show and an entrancing stage backdrop, which displayed images moving to the beat of the music.
This was a concert that mainstream music fans and mash-style remix fans alike could appreciate. Girl Talk spoke directly to the Sherwood Court crowd.
