BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A woman standing on the side of a highway avoided being hit by an oncoming vehicle after exiting her crashed car.
Ashlee McClellan was northbound on U.S. 131 when she lost control of her vehicle that then struck some median cables near 84th Street in Byron Township. Her car spun and faced the opposite direction in the left lane, and its lights were not working after losing power due to the damage.
McClellan, 26, from Dorr, was not hurt and got out of her car. She noticed an SUV was headed toward her so she ran into the median just before the SUV struck her car head-on. The collision caused the SUV to flip on its side.
Police and an ambulance crew arrived at the scene about 11:51 p.m. Wednesday.
Rafael Hernandez, 30, from Grand Rapids, was driving the SUV and told police he did not see McClellan's vehicle. Julian Corrales, 33, from Grand Rapids, and Ruben Castillo, 36, from Wyoming, were the passengers. They were taken to a hospital for treatment to non-life threatening injuries.
All four people were wearing seat belts at the time of the crashes, police said in a news release.
Police at the scene told 24 Hour News 8 McClellan made the correct decision to get out her car at the time.
