LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder appointed Judge David Viviano to the Michigan Supreme Court.
The Republican governor announced the appointment at a Wednesday afternoon news conference in Lansing.
Viviano fills a vacancy created by the resignation of Democrat Diane Hathaway, who quit the Supreme Court in scandal last month. Hathaway pleaded guilty to fraud in a scheme to mislead a bank in the short sale of her home in Grosse Pointe Park.
Hathaway left the court on Jan. 21, but her departure was publicly known much earlier in January.
Republicans have a 4-2 edge on the Supreme Court. Snyder likely will expand that majority with his choice.
Viviano comes to the Michigan Supreme Court from a seat on the Macomb County Probate courts.
