LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation giving people less time to collect signatures to recall officials and combining the votes on removing and replacing them.
The two bills that the Republican governor signed Thursday won approval last week during the Republican-controlled Legislature's lame duck session.
Recall petitions will go to the Board of State Canvassers for review of the clarity of their language. County boards had the duty before.
The time for circulating petitions drops from 90 days to 60 days, and officials can't be recalled in the first or last six months of their terms.
Instead of separate recall and replacement elections, voters will decide between the targeted official and a replacement who's chosen through a primary.
