GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The race for the Republican nomination took another dramatic turn over the weekend with the suspension of Herman Cains campaign.
With Cain's campaign suspended, other candidates will try to encourage Cain supporters to join their cause. It is unclear if any one campaign will be able to attract a majority of Cain supporters.
While Cain surged and then stumbled, Newt Gingrich has taken the top spot in some major polls.
In the RealClearPolitics average of polls, he is well on top.
MItt Romney, another favorite, has maintained fairly steady figures in the polls throughout his campaign -- though he's been labeled a flip-flopper by opponents.
The first real test for the candidates will take place in Iowa on Jan. 3.
Then candidates will compete in New Hampshire on Jan. 10, South Carolina on Jan. 21, and Florida on Jan. 31.
The Michigan Republican primary is Feb. 28. But by the time the race makes it to Michigan, the field of candidates should be narrowed down to two or three real contenders.
